AboutME

The Full Story

My husband and I never really felt the burden of not having enough money. We didn’t pay attention to the money hole we were creating for ourselves. We both had well-paying full-time jobs. We worked and spent because why not? We had money coming in, so it was ok to have all that money going out because it felt guaranteed. We “managed” our money just fine. It was a strong state of denial we lived in until the day we had our first child. Our first reality check came with the hospital bill. It costs how much to give birth to a baby? We didn’t realize how much the medical bills were going to be. I was now on maternity leave and we were going be short money because we didn't save enough. What if we have to go to the hospital again? What if there are costs with the doctor visits? What if the car breaks down? What if one of us loses a job? Childcare is how much?......and on and on the fear of not having enough began to feel like a boulder on our shoulders.

We sat down one night and tallied up all the accounts. There it was in big, bold, ugly numbers right in front of us. A total of $78,000 in a car loan, credit cards, personal loans, student loans, phone debt, and medical bills. We wrote those numbers down on top of the note pad and put together our very first budget. It was very clear we had no room for the “what ifs” and that scared us.

NEVER AGAIN

We put a plan in place and attacked the debt in 17 months. Using a zero-based budget and the debt snowball, we eliminated the debt faster then I believed possible. The dreams we have for our family now feel 100% achievable. Our money no longer controls us; we control it.
